Purpose
The Phlebotomy Skill Set is designed to train students to perform phlebotomy and a variety of other waived tests in the medical laboratory under the direction of a medical laboratory technician, medical laboratory scientist, or other professional. The main focus of the program is to prepare students to attain basic phlebotomy skills in collecting, processing and transporting patient specimens; to attain basic skills and knowledge in performing waived laboratory procedures; to achieve knowledge and skills to successfully pass a phlebotomy certification exam; to communicate verbally and non-verbally with patients, health care professionals and others in an effective, appropriate, and capable manner, while respecting the confidentiality of patient results; to demonstrate professionalism and conduct that reflects safe, legal, and ethical behavior, to demonstrate the importance of attendance, punctuality and proper notification protocol. Students must provide evidence of 100 successful venipunctures during the phlebotomy clinical practicum, along with satisfactory evaluations, and satisfactory attendance to qualify to take the phlebotomy certification exam.
