Purpose
The Health Care Technology Certificate Program prepares graduates as multi-skilled flexible health care workers, who work under the direction of licensed professionals such as medical laboratory technologists, registered nurses, radiologic technologists, surgical technologists, various practitioners and physicians. Graduates may work in a variety of health care settings.
Medical Laboratory Assistants receive and collect samples and work directly with patients. They sort, prepare, and process samples that will be tested and analyzed by a medical laboratory technologist or other health professional. Certification exams are available and students are encouraged to take appropriate national certification exams
The full Health Care Technology Certificate Program - Medical Laboratory Assistant Option is available on the Logan Campus. The Boone/Lincoln, Williamson, and Wyoming/McDowell campuses offer the general education/program support courses only.
Program Level Outcomes:
- Graduates will demonstrate skills, knowledge and proper attitudes to realize a career as entry level Medical Laboratory Technicians in hospitals and other health care environments.
- Graduates must demonstrate professionalism and conduct that reflects safe, legal, and ethical behavior.
- Graduates will have the necessary knowledge to be able to pass a national certification examination.
- Graduates must be able to communicate in a facilitative, purposeful and respectful manner with patients, families, colleagues, and other members of the health care team.
- Graduates will have knowledge of prospective job information in an effort to achieve 100% placement within 3 months of graduation or for continuing their undergraduate education in medical technology or other field of their choice.

Medical Laboratory Assistant
Suggested Course Sequence (see **below) Total Credit Hours: 30

¹ Students planning to continue their studies toward an AAS in Medical Laboratory Technology are advised to take MT 128 in place of MT 121 or consult the institution to which you plan to transfer.
*Courses must be taken together in the same semester. Courses will be offered in both the Fall and Spring terms.
**Note: The term course sequence may be reversed or altered to meet the student’s needs with the exception of BS 124 and BS 125 which must be taken consecutively.
This degree program provides students the opportunity to receive credit for their high school EDGE courses (http://careertech.k12.wv.us/edge/edgeCollege.html) as designated by the (E) within the program sequence.
